Constructivst Film Production Lesson

This online lesson plan was created for the UBC ETEC 530 Master’s course.

The lesson targets beginner film students in grade 10, 11 or 12. However, it can also be taken as a refresher lesson for advanced film students who might need to review some basic filming concepts.

It is a first step in a creative process that will include:

  • Writing a scirpt & creating a story board
  • Filming
  • Editing on the computer
  • Transferring the film onto DVD & formatting it for the web
  • Presenting the film at our official screening
  • Participating in our school’s Film Festival
  • Sending the film to provincial, national and international festivals

It is also one of the initial corner stone towards a 1 to 3 month production experience that will culminate in the re-definition of what digital film making means to the students involved in the program.

Some questions that crew members will discuss during the process are:

What assumptions (beliefs) do you have about movies? For example:

  • Are films only for entertainment?
  • Are movies educational by nature?
  • Does cinema chage society or does it reinforce established beliefs?
